Nursery in progress.

Time marches on. And as it does, the little bedroom in the back corner of our house slowly transforms into a beautiful space encompassed by soft shades of blue and pink. As the old and the new come together to create an environment worthy of our sweet little girl, we daydream of the life that we will soon live.

More than Little's.

   This is the room in the house that stops me in my tracks every time. The soft pinks and blues, the flowing canopy hanging above, and the closet full of girly outfits and trinkets spark my imagination and make me a little sappy.

 

   When I look at Little's room, I see more than just a place to lay her down to sleep, more than a place to sing to her or rock her or read her bedtime stories. When I look in Little's room, I see a little piece of my past. Some of my most cherished items as a child will also be a staple in Little's childhood, too. In her crib, lies my precious old Puff-Puff and a blanket my great-grandmother knitted for me as a baby just waiting to be loved and adored by Little. Hanging in the closet are several of the clothes I wore as an infant/toddler. My mom and Grandma took their sweet time cleaning them and restoring them to like-new condition.

   This is more than a room. This is a memory. 

 

Project Nursery: Started!

  So, I'm really not one of those who can't wait to set up the nursery or have been out buying baby items since the day we found out we were pregnant. In fact, I have only bought a few things for Little so far, since I only recently made a decision on a theme for the nursery or how on earth all of the furniture is going to fit neatly in such a small space.

  

   Now that we are officially down to a single income household, I realize there has to be some limit to my spending and an explosion of my creativity when it comes to this little room. So, I've started with a few DIY projects and a Goodwill shopping trip to supply the room with cutesy yet inexpensive decor.

    I'd like to share just a taste of how the nursery is coming along. We still have lots of projects to complete and wall ornaments to hang, but with 4 months left to go, we have plenty of time to make it perfect.

Little's Hanging Orbs.

   I'm not sure if the nesting phase includes an increase in creative inspiration, but lately it has been difficult to see the plethora of cute nursery decorations and not think, "I could do that!" So, after a couple hours searching the internet for my first nursery project, I chose one that would make a great addition to the room where Little will lay her head. 

 

So, I headed to the store in search of the fake flower section to pick out the perfect ones for my project. For the record, I loathe fake flowers and do not believe I have ever purchased them until now, but for my decorative orbs, I must use them.  

    Next, I found some 20 gauge utility wire - wire sturdy enough to hold its shape, but flexible enough to form a shape easily.
 
   With the materials purchased, I started by cutting four pieces of wire in equal lengths and forming circles of equal sizes. After the circles were formed I interlocked and connected them at each intersection with small pieces of the remaining wire, until a sphere was formed.

 
      Next I used a knife to form a slit in each of the flowers and filled the stems with Tacky Glue before finding the perfect placement for the individual flowers over the wire.

    This is the first of three cute little orbs I plan to make and hang over the crib. The plans are for the three to be slightly different sizes, and slightly different colors.  We still have a while until crunch time hits us and we have to get in nursery mode real quick, but until then,  I'll be perfectly happy finding little projects and activities that I can do to make the nursery more personal and inviting for Little. :)
